Alfonsin Rosario Says Adios to Arizona

Derek Bernard ripped two doubles, drove-in a run, and scored a run, Roynier Hernandez singled twice, walked, stole two bases, and scored a run, Gabriel Terrero drilled a double and two singles and scored a run, Kelvin Hidalgo singled twice and scored a run, Cristopher Navarro belted a solo HR, and SP Peyton Battenfield (signed six days ago after getting released by the Mets at the end of Spring Training) fired four innings of one hit shutout ball with six strikeouts and combined with five relievers on a three-hitter, as the Rockies defeated the Cubs 5-3 in Cactus League Extended Spring Trai

Cubs vs. Astros: Series Thread (Games 23-25)

The Cubs split a series with the Marlins and greet the Astros at Wrigley, now with a 13-9 record. The Astros have struggled to a 7-16 record to start the season and the second worst team ERA in the majors, leading only the Rockies. Their offense remains potent and the Astros roster is still worthy of caution. See below for daily matchups as the Cubs finish up their homestand with three games against the 'Stros.

Rosario Drops 5th & 6th Bombs at Sloan Park

Alfonsin Rosario singled in the 1st, belted a two-run HR onto the LF berm in the 4th, and blasted a solo HR onto the LF berm in the 6th, Adan Sanchez smacked a two-run HR onto the LF berm in the 2nd, Bradlee Beesley singled, doubled, stole two bases, and scored two runs, Anderson Suriel smoked a double and scored, stroked an RBI single, and stole a base, and Miguel Pabon drilled an RBI single and scored a run, leading the Cubs to an 8-5 victory over the Diamondbacks in a Cactus League Extended Spring Training game played Monday afternoon at Sloan Park in Mesa, AZ.

Cubs 2024 Rule 5 Draft and Minor League Free-Agent Watch List

The Cubs have signed second-contract free-agent LHP Mitchell Tyranski (ex-LAD) to a minor league contract.

4/18 UPDATE:

The Cubs have signed free-agent RHP Julio Teheran to a 2024 minor league contract.

Because he has Article XIX-A rights (meaning he has accrued at least five years of MLB Service Time), Teheran cannot be sent to the minors (optioned or outrighted) without his consent if he is added to the 40 at some point in 2024.

A's Walk Their Way to Victory at Fitch Park

Joseph Rodriguez walked with the bases loaded to force-in the winning run, as the Athletics took advantage of ten walks to edge the Cubs 7-6 in a Cactus League Extended Spring Training game played Friday afternoon on Field # 4 at the Lew Wolf Training Complex at Fitch Park in Mesa, AZ.

The game was pre-planned as a five-inning contest, as both teams had only a limited number of pitchers available to cover the innings.

Here is the abridged box score from the game (Cubs players only):

A's Stop the Rosario HR Streak at Sloan Park

German Ortiz belted a two-run double, Carlos Gonzalez drilled a two-run single, and SP Steven Echavarria (A's 2023 3rd round pick and #2 pitching prospect) tossed five innings of one-run ball while allowing three hits and no walks, striking out eight, and retiring the last eleven men he faced in a row, leading the Athletics to a 6-3 victory over the Cubs in Cactus League Extended Spring Training game action Thursday afternoon at Sloan Park in Mesa, AZ.

It's 4 in a row 4 Rosario!

Demetrio Crisantes laced a triple and two RBI singles, reached base on an HBP, and scored two runs, Adrian Rodriguez hammered an RBI triple and a double, reached base on an HBP, and scored three runs, Jean Walters tripled, reached base on an HBP, and scored two runs, Channy Ortiz smashed a solo HR over the RF bullpen, singled, and walked, and SP Josh Green and four relievers combined on a three-hitter, leading the Diamondbacks to a 9-2 victory over the Cubs in Cactus League Extended Spring Training game action Tuesday afternoon at Sloan Park in Mesa, AZ.

Cub Long Balls Tie Up Rockies at Talking Stick

Jose Escobar (opposite-field line-drive), Alfonsin Rosario (light-tower moonshot), and Bradlee Beesley (hard-contact blast) belted solo home runs, Anderson Suriel doubled, walked and scored two runs, and Adan Sanchez drilled an RBI single, reached base on an HBP, and walked for the Cubs, and Juan Castillo smacked a two-run double and Franklin Lopez laced a two-run triple for the Rockies, as the two teams played to a 6-6 tie in a Cactus League Extended Spring Training game played Monday afternoon on Dust Storm Field at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick, east of Scottsdale, AZ.

    Things I've been wrong about:

-Tauchman is fine as a 4th OF. I knew that. I just want a better LH DH option and he was really the DH for us until Seiya got hurt. I'm glad Mervis is getting a chance at it. Caissie is coming for that job for sure. But Tauchman continues to be highly useful as a 4th OF with Seiya being hurt

-I wanted Yency to go to get guys at Iowa a chance. Guys like Palencia and Sanders or RileyT. Maybe even Hodge! But Yency has been better the last two plus weeks. He did hit 96 the other day. He was 93 in Texas to open the season.

-Leiter has his split working enough. It just needs to stay there

-I was surprised Jed picked Wisdom over Cooper. I wonder if this happens if Seiya wasn't hurt. Wisdom has more power. Cooper is the better hitter. Jed picked Wisdom and Wisdom had an option left as well.

-Palencia just doesn't miss enough bats. Similar to ManRod, just two yrs younger. ManRod is killing AAA for TB right now!

Things I got right so far:

-Hendricks. Sorry Kyle. You got paid though!

    Jed, you missed there.

-Smyly. If Jed could've traded him before or during ST, then he should have and saved some cash.

-Mastro.  Not a LH DH. Pinch runner. Defensive utility. Maybe he's better than Madrigal but didn't get a legit chance to prove it.

-Luke Little is good. He's had one bad outing. That's it. Needs to get better entering with guys on base. But he needs to stay in MLB.

-Oh yeah....Morel is doing fine at 3B! He'll get better as well!!

South Bend just lost the lead in the bottom of the 9th on the weirdest scenario, ever.

It's absolutely pouring on 1st and 2nd, 1out....JPatterson asks for a new ball, but no time out was called....he throws the old ball toward the dugout (not sure if it rolled out of play).....the ump declares the runners get two bases each so one run scores. Then a single up the middle ties the game.

The rain was coming down in buckets at this point.

    Just weird

...and bellinger is gone in the 7th because of that 2nd blown chance and the wall he bounced off of...

hopefully his rib cage/shoulder feels better tomorrow, we just got happ back.

Any thoughts on Y. Rojas' stuff and Y. Melendez's game (I believe I've asked about him before, sorry)?

morel with 4 clean plays in 4 innings...showed off his 100000000mph arm a couple times.

cody bellinger not having a good 4th, though...5 run leads are handy when your CF is making your pitcher have a 5-out inning.  2nd blown chance was ruled a hit even though it went in/out of his glove...1st was lost in the lights, also ruled a hit.

oh yeah, totally, i was just chiming about why i fan like i fan.

i would like nothing more than hendricks to keep on hendricks'ing.  guys with his stuff can throw for a long, long time as long as it works.

he velocity is actually up a minor amount this year.  it's really "damn" when a guy like him not only has gas in the tank, but it's looking like it was years ago.  he added a curve a few years ago and it helped a little bit, but he's throwing it less and less while the fb/change combo are less effective.

CRUNCH—There is no one person in this community I’m talking about.  My remarks were not directed at you or anyone, but at a tone I’ve noticed lately.

You have a great, dry sense of humor and there is thought behind your comments.   You and I don’t always agree but I always understand your position.

Lastly, and I’ll be quiet, I agree with you on Hendricks.  We can dislike the recent performance but still love the guy.  Lots of questions about his future.
