Cubs @ Diamondbacks: Series Thread (Games 16-18)

By holding on to their 3-2 lead Sunday afternoon, the Cubs collected their first road series win of the season and improved to 9-6 on the season. Michael Busch "drives the bus" to Arizona next, where he'll have a chance to continue his current four-game homerun streak against the 8-8 Diamondbacks. See below for matchups.

A Mule on the Mound and a Rosario Bomb on the Berm at Sloan Park

Alfonsin Rosario crushed a towering solo HR high onto the LF berm (his second HR this week), singled, reached base on an HBP, and stole a base, and Anderson Suriel belted an RBI triple for the Cubs, and Jairo Pomares cracked a solo HR and a single, and Charlie Szykowny singled, doubled, walked, and scored two runs for the Giants, as the two teams played to a 5-5 tie in Cactus League Extended Spring Training game action Friday afternoon at Sloan Park in Mesa, AZ.

The game was called after seven innings of play.

Peralta Just Can't Stop Hitting Doubles in Mesa

SP Yenrri Rojas hurled three innings of perfect baseball, David Peralta doubled twice, stole a base, and drove-in a run, and Anderson Suriel drilled a game-tying RBI double with one out in the top of the 9th for the Cubs, and SP Luis Morales tossed three innings of one-run ball with five strikeouts and Reynaldo de la Paz (game-tying RBI single in the 7th) and Clark Elliott (RBI double in the 8th) stroked run-scoring hits late in the game for the Athletics, as the Cubs and A's played to a 2-2 tie in Cactus League Extended Spring Training game action Tuesday afternoon on Field # 4 at the Lew

Cubs Home Run Bats Overwhelm Rockies Pitchers at Sloan Park

Felix Stevens crushed an opposite-field grand slam over the right-centerfield fence to put the Cubs on the board in the bottom of the 1st inning, Alfonsin Rosario belted a three-run moonshot HR high onto the LF berm, Geuri Lubo lined a two-run HR into the LF bullpen, Anderson Suriel clobbered a solo oppo-HR to left-center, David Peralta doubled, walked twice, and scored two runs, Adan Sanchez doubled, singled, stole a base, and scored a run, Yahil Melendez singled twice, walked, and scored two runs, Brennen Davis singled, walked, and scored a run, SP Luis Devers fired three innings of one-h

Cubs @ Padres (Games 10-12)

The Cubs took two of three against the Dodgers. Although they were held in check by Yamamoto, the offense was able to break through against the youngsters Miller and Stone along with the Dodger's relief corps. The Cubs begin a West Coast road trip with a three game series in San Diego. See below for matchups.

Cubs vs. Rockies: Game Thread (Game 6)

The Cubs improved to 3-2 with a blowout of the Rockies on Tuesday night. They bring a relatively rested bullpen into Wednesday's game before a scheduled day off. With near freezing temperatures and precipitation in the forecast, the Cubs plan to use big lefty Luke Little as an opener. Ben Brown last pitched on Saturday and Alzolay, Merryweather, Leiter, and Neris each pitched last on Sunday. So, get ready for a true bullpen game if there is no postponement.

Cubs vs. Rockies: Game Thread (Game 5)

The Cubs improved to 2-2 on the back of six shutout innings from Imanaga in his debut and a break from the Rockies that turned a hard single to left into the equivalent of a three run homerun. Javier Assad takes the ball as the Cubs attempt to push into winning territory. In 2023, Assad followed his work representing Mexico in the World Baseball Classic by putting up a little over 100 innings in 10 starts and 22 relief appearances. He improved his walk rate compared to 2022 and has been the Cubs go-to swing man.

Taillon Gets Lotsa Swing & Miss at Riverview

Geuri Lubo doubled twice and drove-in a run, Albert Gutierrez stroked an RBI double and scored a run, Leonel Espinoza reached base on an HBP, walked, stole a base and scored a run, and Squad "A" SP Freilyn Silverio fired 3.1 IP of shutout ball, in Cubs Spring Training Minor League Camp intrasquad game action Tuesday morning on Field # 1 at the Riverview Baseball Complex in Mesa, AZ.

The game was pre-planned as a five-inning affair.

    Things I've been wrong about:

-Tauchman is fine as a 4th OF. I knew that. I just want a better LH DH option and he was really the DH for us until Seiya got hurt. I'm glad Mervis is getting a chance at it. Caissie is coming for that job for sure. But Tauchman continues to be highly useful as a 4th OF with Seiya being hurt

-I wanted Yency to go to get guys at Iowa a chance. Guys like Palencia and Sanders or RileyT. Maybe even Hodge! But Yency has been better the last two plus weeks. He did hit 96 the other day. He was 93 in Texas to open the season.

-Leiter has his split working enough. It just needs to stay there

-I was surprised Jed picked Wisdom over Cooper. I wonder if this happens if Seiya wasn't hurt. Wisdom has more power. Cooper is the better hitter. Jed picked Wisdom and Wisdom had an option left as well.

-Palencia just doesn't miss enough bats. Similar to ManRod, just two yrs younger. ManRod is killing AAA for TB right now!

Things I got right so far:

-Hendricks. Sorry Kyle. You got paid though!

    Jed, you missed there.

-Smyly. If Jed could've traded him before or during ST, then he should have and saved some cash.

-Mastro.  Not a LH DH. Pinch runner. Defensive utility. Maybe he's better than Madrigal but didn't get a legit chance to prove it.

-Luke Little is good. He's had one bad outing. That's it. Needs to get better entering with guys on base. But he needs to stay in MLB.

-Oh yeah....Morel is doing fine at 3B! He'll get better as well!!

    bellinger "right rib contusion"

South Bend just lost the lead in the bottom of the 9th on the weirdest scenario, ever.

It's absolutely pouring rain....men on 1st and 2nd, 1out....JPatterson asks for a new ball, but no time out was called....he throws the old ball toward the dugout (not sure if it rolled out of play).....the ump declares the runners get two bases each so one run scores. Then a single up the middle ties the game.

The rain was coming down in buckets at this point.

    Just weird

...and bellinger is gone in the 7th because of that 2nd blown chance and the wall he bounced off of...

hopefully his rib cage/shoulder feels better tomorrow, we just got happ back.

    Phil,

Any thoughts on Y. Rojas' stuff and Y. Melendez's game (I believe I've asked about him before, sorry)?

wow, things are moving fast.  hopefully it continues.

morel with 4 clean plays in 4 innings...showed off his 100000000mph arm a couple times.

cody bellinger not having a good 4th, though...5 run leads are handy when your CF is making your pitcher have a 5-out inning.  2nd blown chance was ruled a hit even though it went in/out of his glove...1st was lost in the lights, also ruled a hit.

welcome back happ!  double off the wall 1st PA back.

oh yeah, totally, i was just chiming about why i fan like i fan.

i would like nothing more than hendricks to keep on hendricks'ing.  guys with his stuff can throw for a long, long time as long as it works.

he velocity is actually up a minor amount this year.  it's really "damn" when a guy like him not only has gas in the tank, but it's looking like it was years ago.  he added a curve a few years ago and it helped a little bit, but he's throwing it less and less while the fb/change combo are less effective.

CRUNCH—There is no one person in this community I’m talking about.  My remarks were not directed at you or anyone, but at a tone I’ve noticed lately.

You have a great, dry sense of humor and there is thought behind your comments.   You and I don’t always agree but I always understand your position.

Lastly, and I’ll be quiet, I agree with you on Hendricks.  We can dislike the recent performance but still love the guy.  Lots of questions about his future.
