Cubs @ Rockies: Series Thread (Games 145-147)

Despite dropping the first three games against the Diamondbacks this weekend, the Cubs pulled out a win in the final game and remain in the second NL Wild Card spot and three games back in the Central. They begin this week on the road in Colorado where they will play three games against a Rockies team aspiring to lose fewer than 100 games this season. Kris Bryant recently took batting practice but remains without a timetable for his return from a finger fracture.

Hope Springs Eternal in Mesa

Zyhir Hope led off the bottom of the 1st inning with a triple and scored, Alexis Hernandez collected two RBI singles, Geuri Lubo drilled an RBI single, walked, and scored a run, and SP Alfredo Romero tossed three innings of shutout ball, as the Cubs defeated the Athletics 4-1 in Arizona Instructional League "Bridge Camp" game action Friday morning on Field # 1 at the Riverview Baseball Complex in Mesa, AZ.

The Cubs are now 1-4 through their first five Instructs games.

A's Feed Cubs Goose Eggs at Fitch Park

Nate Nankill belted a solo home run, Nelson Beltran and Darlyn Montero stroked RBI singles, and SP Nathan Dettmer and four relievers combined to hurl a six-hit shutout, as the Athletics blanked the Cubs 6-0 in Arizona Instructional League "Bridge Camp" game action Thursday morning at the Lew Wolff Training Complex at Fitch Park in Mesa, AZ.

Cubs vs. Diamondbacks: Series Thread (Games 141-144)

The Cubs swept the Giants to climb to 1.5 games back both in the NL Central and behind the Phillies for the top NL Wild Card spot. Moreover, the offense showed up for this series, with Bellinger and Suzuki staying hot and benefitting from support throughout the lineup. Twenty-two games remain to land a preferable playoff position. They host the Wild Card hopeful Arizona Diamondbacks starting this Thursday. See below for matchups in the four-game series.

Angels Take the Labor Day Contest at Sloan Park

Dario Laverde drilled an RBI double and a single, John Wimmer doubled, singled, and scored a run, Capri Ortiz singled twice and stole three bases, and SP Yendy Gomez hurled three innings of no run / no hit ball, leading the Angels to a 6-3 victory over the Cubs in Arizona Instructional League "Bridge Camp" Labor Day game action Monday afternoon at Sloan Park in Mesa, AZ.

truth.  spring means little...february games in spring means very little...and the last innings of a february spring game means practically nothing for challenging talent evaluation, but it was fun to watch.

  • Cubster (view)

The last 2 innings were fun.

double off the wall in his next AB.

shaw almost hit one out in the last inning, too...got a triple.

PCA still looking good with a double today...and another one for a game tieing bloop double in the 9th.

cubs fans gonna have a spring training aneurysm for the minor league kids if this keeps up.

b.davis takes a fastball to the head, stays in the game.

    ....but wait...there's more!

vazquez makes an ugly (and unsuccessful) tag play and it looks like his wrist took the worst of it.

he's staying in the game, though the batter he clocked in the face is coming out.

shaw snags a soft liner to his left for the 3rd out.

  • crunch (view)

given how every other person on the field is playing in the 7th, matt shaw probably doesn't want to touch the ball.  the entire team's defense has reverted to T-Ball level of play.  surprised the OF'rs aren't looking for 4-leaf clovers in the grass.

    no errors, just bad baseball.

  • crunch (view)

matt shaw playing 3rd in the 7th.  out of sheer curiosity, it would be nice to see him field and throw to 1st.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

Hard to be certain there… I think he’s in a battle with a few guys. Alzolay, Neris, Merryweather, Leiter, Almonte likely either locks or near locks unless they’re hurt or absolutely awful. Assad will be there unless he’s a SP, same for Smyly. Them being SP opens another spot but I’m assuming Little is battling for the last spot with Palencia, Cuas, wesneski (another SP candidate), Keegan, CJ, Sanders, R Thompson, Wieck, Roberts, Lovelady.

  • Childersb3 (view)

Gotta believe Little makes the OD roster
He was pretty good last year
Went from SB, to TN, to IA to Chicago
He did well enough and has that rare 6-8 LH velo and spin

  • Childersb3 (view)

    Seems fair
Horn was going to have to beat our Smyly, Little and Leiter to get MLB time this year
He has options of course, but a move had to be made and Jed didn't want to give up Smyly, Leiter, Almonte or Mervis.

Now that Bellinger is clear to join us, here are the next questions:

Phil, do you think Jed/Counsell take Cooper over Wisdom (consistency over power)?
Or, do they option Canario, deal Mervis, and add Cooper or Peralta?
Or even do both of these moves?
Peralta and Cooper are veteran bench bats with decent.
Cooper is pretty good vs Lefties
Peralta wasn't that good vs Righties last yr (but his career #'s are good)

I'd like to see Canario get his chance (just like Morel is getting and like Velazquez should've)
But he could get max ABs in Iowa.
