Quintana gave up 2 ER in 5 innings and had a no-decision against the Pirates on Friday. He's 4-1 with a 2.17 in six starts against the Brewers this season, including 6.2 scoreless innings on September 11 at Wrigley. The Brewers are 63-310 (.203) against him. Moustakas is 12-46 with 3 HR, and Yelich is 1-11.

Chacin won in St. Louis his last time out (5 IP, 1 ER). He's 2-2 with a 1.59 in four starts against the Cubs this season. For their careers, they are 32-32 (.242) against him. Murphy is 8-20 with 2 HR.

For the Brewers to win the division it will take 8 straight wins, 5 on the road, and 4 of those road games against the top two teams in the division.

I have trouble feeling heartbroken about this as Milwaukee earned every bit of it and I would have happily taken 95 wins at the beginning of the season.  

Meanwhile, if the Cubs can't win 1 of 2 at home against hte top teams in the league, they wouldn't be going far in the playoffs anyway.

Agreed. Though this is on a completely different cosmic scale from 1969 (which I remember well, sigh), the point is that the Cubs weren't bad-- the Brewers were really good. My one quibble is that the Milwaukee fans don't support the team the way they should. My daughter lives a few blocks from Miller Park, so we get up there a couple of times a year, and about three weeks ago, we watched a game there (Chacin pitched), and there were maybe 20,000 empty seats. I realize it's a smaller market, but for years I've been joking that if the Brewers won the division, they'd be on Page 7 in the Sentinel, after "Aaron Rodgers has a hangnail in Week 4."

Going out on a limb here, but I presume when the opposing team’s #8 hitter has twice as many hits as your team, things generally are not going well.

and maddon put kintzler in yet again...again...again...

i get that he's a ground ball pitcher, but putting him in a game with men on has been a disaster.  when you look the numbers he's actually earned independant of that, it's probably not a good idea to put him in anyway.  he does a good enough job without help putting other team's runs on the board.

I'm so confused as to why Kintzler is the goat of the game in this thread?

Cubs have no bullpen and a horribly inconsistent offense.  Wilson really put the Cubs in a huge bind, but he's been overperforming expectations all year so I can't fault Maddon for that.  Milwaukee's team is built for a tie in the 6th inning.  The Cubs aren't.

he's had a few weeks of cubs history of being put into games, especially important games, with men on base and screwing it up.

he got put into a game with men on...the guy with the 2.00+ whip and 7.00+ era as a cub.

it's more like...oh look, kintzler is here to give up some runs.  oh look, he's giving up runs.

i don't think he was the key to the loss today or even the worst thing to happen, but seeing him come into a game with men on got old many games ago.

Do we care who wins Dodgers/Rockies?

This is backwards thinking, but I'd rather lose to the Rockies then lose to the Dodgers.  Perils of living in Los Angeles.

How many games have the Cubs scored just one run on a solo homer?  We can rip the the bullpen but that's not what really lost the game.  2 runs over 4 innings isn't great, but its not imploding either.

I tip my hat to the Brewers, feels like they earned it moreso than the Cubs choked it way.  Hopefully Dodgers and the Rocks go 18 innings followed by an unplanned plane landing.

Just back from the ballpark. -- very strange to see the Brewers and their fans celebrate like they just won a playoff series (i.e. eliminated the Cubs), when the Cubs have a playoff game tomrorow and the same 2 teams could begin a series Thursday.  Weird vibe.  Also, losing sucks

crunch,  I was out on my daughter's front porch watching my 3-year-old granddaughter on her scooter, but I could see the game on their TV through the front door. I was glad to be able to not hear the commentary. What dreck. I' m so spoiled by Pat Hughes, one of the greatest radio play-by-play announcers, and even by Jim DeShaies-- "Should we call Contreras Aaron Burr, because he gunned down Hamilton?"

Cubs beat Kyle Freeland and Rockies 3-2 earlier this season at Wrigley. Unfortunately much of the offense was Addison Russell.

Haven't been here in awhile, just thought I would check in on what the knowledgeable fans are thinking.

My only thought is that this team over the last few years is a bit like the Terminator character (the second one, the dude who gets buried by nitrogen). 

I always think they're dead. Then, boom! 

Brewers this offseason did something Theo didn't: Picked up Yelich and Cain. In the same damn day. I hope Theo has figured out his line up isn't quite as good as he thought.

Cubs scored 60 fewer runs this year

OPS dropped from .775 to .745

K's was the huge issue last year, and the Cubs only struck out 20 fewer times...while walking 50 fewer times.

Yes, of course it is ultimately the players...but a big deal seemed to be made when Davis came in, and people were singing his praises after the first two months.  Just don't see that he helped the team with basic approach at the plate and let the wheels come off.

Chili was supposed to be all about using the whole field and not worrying about launch angles and such, which presumably would lead to a more consistent offense.  The Cubs scored one or zero runs in 39 games -- second only to the sub-50 win Orioles, who did it 40 times.  The last 2 games were the epitome of the season -- 10 runs Sunday, 1 run Monday.

Not really a blame the coach guy but Chili should be nervous.  Cubs offense has been inconsistent and the Red Sox really took off without him.  Although that may be more a result of Cubs not having a healthy Kris Bryant and the Red Sox adding JD Martinez.  Wish I had time/ability to dig up the stats, but it feels like a few big positive outlier games help prop up the overall average.  Maybe Fangraphs can do a report on gap between average and median offensive output?

Huge regressions from Russell and Contreras in slugging percentage, which I think helps explain some of the offensive decline. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it) they are both superior fielders, so we had two spots in the lineup that were essentially useless all season. I am not saying either player or Chili is to blame. Only pointing out that the Cubs received offense from positions that historically are not offensive positions in previous seasons and didn't this year.

I am vehemently on the other side of the argument, billybucks.  I don't care how simple or slack your job is, one day off in six weeks is a recipe for bad production.  Wouldn't be allowed in some places I've worked. 

In matters more to hand, the last time the Brewers played 10 straight days was coming out of the All Star break.  They played 9 straight end of August to early Sept.  Six days a week with every Thursday off since.

I defintitley see your point.  Clearly it would have been better to have a more normal schedule. But, every player had days off, and, I mean, as I said,  it's baseball.  These are not medical residents pulling all-nighters working in the ER.  I just think the narrative became a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy, with Joe and Theo and Jed publicly complaining about it.

Since June my mantra was they were not going deep in the Playoffs. W/o a bullpen, it is impossible these games as the 1-0 0r 2-1 wins arent gonna happen. 95 wins was truly remarkable. But, the Brewers are much more set up to succeed in the tourney. I expect them in the WS.

    I don’t buy that. They had been doing that for years.

    They did it with Matt Holliday. They did it with John Lackey. They did it with Mark Mulder. They did it with Jason Heyward, who had a great year for them. I’m sure there’s more but those come to mind immediately.

    I attribute it more to a breakdown in what they’re doing in terms of development than a culture thing.

    The other part that’s kind of crazy is they made two very high profile trades, one for Goldschmidt and one for Arenado, and they very clearly won those trades. They just haven’t been able to develop players the last handful of years the way they usually do.

    I guess the moral there is it’s hard to stay on top of your game and be good at what you do in perpetuity.
