Cubs vs. Rockies: Game Thread (Game 4)

Shota Imanaga makes his MLB debut to kick off April. He'll represent the 1-2 Chicago Cubs as they greet Kris Bryant and the Colorado Rockies for a three-game series at Wrigley. Imanaga was the major free agent addition for the offseason after reportedly falling in love with Chicago this winter. Chicago appears to be in for some unpleasant weather this week--we'll see how Imanaga's appreciation for the setting holds up. Cold temps and wind should help Imanaga's extreme fly ball ways as long as he can maintain feeling in his fingers.

Former Cardinal Dakota Hudson presents a familiar face as the opposing starter. The 29-year-old right was non-tendered by the Cardinals following a disappointing 2023 season. He made 12 starts in the majors, along with six relief appearances, and 11 starts in the minors. His ERA and stikeouts per nine innings converged at 4.98 while his fastbal has declined a couple ticks compared to where he sat as a starter 2019-2021. Bellinger and Swanson have each put up an OPS over 1.000 in 10 at bats against him and Garrett Cooper has gone 2-4 but is set to start this game on the bench while Seiya Suzuki gets a DH day.

If the weather plays out as forecast, this one could get fairly chaotic--or the Cubs might be in for some postponed games this week. Cross your fingers and join us in the comments at 1:20 pm central as we celebrate the home opener.

Home plate umpire Ben May had one of the worst games calling balls and strikes I've seen in years. There were several pitches that were at least a baseball-width out of the zone that he called strikes, and several that were well in the strike-zone box that he called balls. He made mistakes that hurt both teams, but the main negative impact was on Cub hitters and Imanaga. Ben May find himself umping in the minors at this rate.

The two AAA leagues are using the Automate Ball / Strike (ABS) system in 2024.

On Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays the ABS system will call all balls & strikes (the home plate umpire will receive an instantaneous audio transmission reporting whether the pitch was a ball or a strike and then the ump will "make the call"), and on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, the home plate umpire will call balls & strikes without the aid of the ABS, but the batter, the catcher, or the pitcher can request a challenge (the challenge must be requested within two seconds of the ball / strike call), at which point the ABS system will notify the home plate ump whether the pitch was a ball or a strike.

Each club can make as many challenges as they wish during the course of the game until they lose three challenges, at which point they will no longer have a challenge.

The two different types of systems (the first being all balls & strikes called by the ABS and then relayed to the home plate umpire, and the second being the challenge system) will be compared to determine which of the two systems would be best for the game in the event that ABS is implemented in MLB at some point in the future.

Besides the matter of tradition, the single biggest issue will be the reliability of the ABS technology. In other words, does ABS make mistakes?

ronel blanco (HOU) with a 105 pitch no-hitter!  a no hitter on the first day of april, wow.

walked 2, K'd 7.

Okay, this is completly off the discussion. I have noticed several times that organist John Benedeck has been  playing a phrase from the first movement of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana ("O Fortuna"). He has done some hilariously hip music for opposing players over the last couple of years (succeeding the immortal Gary Pressey), but I don't get this one. I ask the very diverse TCR community to help me out! What's the connection? I can't find any pattern, but maybe it's for two-strike counts. ("O, Fortuna")

i say we rip the bandaid off.

hendricks pitches every inning, every day, every game...in a row...until he's on the IL.

Steele will throw 3 live innings in AZ on Friday.

Seiya did "light" baseball activities today.

We just need to hang in for a couple of weeks

dude threw 4 innings of 4 run ball and lowered his ERA...improvement!

but yeah, i'm done.  there's a guy with 2 pitches in the pen named ben brown that seems to be doing a bit better than hendricks's 2 pitches.

    steele...how your leg, bro?

For the love of baseball and all that's holy, please - no more Kyle Hendricks.

hendricks still gets some K's, but dude is just throwing complex batting practice.

sometimes it gets hit where a glove happens to be, sometimes it isn't.

    two pitches, both hittable.

No Happ. Not sure if he’s still just day to day. Amaya catching Hendricks. Busch hitting cleanup.  OF is Canario, Bellinger, Tauchman. Cooper DH. Chilly (around 50 degrees) but sunny.
