Taillon Gets Lotsa Swing & Miss at Riverview

Geuri Lubo doubled twice and drove-in a run, Albert Gutierrez stroked an RBI double and scored a run, Leonel Espinoza reached base on an HBP, walked, stole a base and scored a run, and Squad "A" SP Freilyn Silverio fired 3.1 IP of shutout ball, in Cubs Spring Training Minor League Camp intrasquad game action Tuesday morning on Field # 1 at the Riverview Baseball Complex in Mesa, AZ.

The game was pre-planned as a five-inning affair.

SP James Taillon (on Cubs MLB 15-day IL - back strain) got the start for Squad "B," and hurled three innings of shutout ball, allowing two hits (a single by Scott McKeon and a double by David Peralta) and two walks (one to David Peralta and one to Patrick Wisdom), while striking out five (all five swinging, including Patrick Wisdom twice, and Bradlee Beesley, Felix Stevens, and Alfonsin Rosario once each), with a 2/2 GO/AO. Taillon threw a total of 43 pitches (28 strikes - 11 swing & miss - six foul balls), including 17 pitches in the 1st inning, 14 in the second, and twelve in the third.

Because there weren't quite enough players available to staff two full squads, Bradlee Beesley played CF and Scott McKeon played 2B for both squads, and some players took one AB initially with one squad and then another AB later with the other squad. However, Peralta, Wisdom, Beesley, and McKeon only batted against Taillon.

No question Jameson Taillon looks "ready to roll." His stuff was absolutely filthy today, as evidenced by the many swing & miss. He should be ready to go four innings and throw around 60+ pitches in his rehab outing planned for this coming weekend (presumably at Iowa?).

Because his 15-day IL stint was backdated to three days prior to MLB Opening Day, Taillon is eligible to be reinstated from the IL on April 9th, although I suspect it would be more like maybe 4/17 in Arizona (that would give him two rehab starts to ramp-up to five innings / 75-80 pitches).

Okay, this is completly off the discussion. I have noticed several times that organist John Benedeck has been  playing a phrase from the first movement of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana ("O Fortuna"). He has done some hilariously hip music for opposing players over the last couple of years (succeeding the immortal Gary Pressey), but I don't get this one. I ask the very diverse TCR community to help me out! What's the connection? I can't find any pattern, but maybe it's for two-strike counts. ("O, Fortuna")

i say we rip the bandaid off.

hendricks pitches every inning, every day, every game...in a row...until he's on the IL.

Steele will throw 3 live innings in AZ on Friday.

Seiya did "light" baseball activities today.

    bleh.  cubs lose.

dude threw 4 innings of 4 run ball and lowered his ERA...improvement!

but yeah, i'm done.  there's a guy with 2 pitches in the pen named ben brown that seems to be doing a bit better than hendricks's 2 pitches.

    steele...how your leg, bro?

For the love of baseball and all that's holy, please - no more Kyle Hendricks.

hendricks still gets some K's, but dude is just throwing complex batting practice.

sometimes it gets hit where a glove happens to be, sometimes it isn't.

    two pitches, both hittable.

No Happ. Not sure if he’s still just day to day. Amaya catching Hendricks. Busch hitting cleanup.  OF is Canario, Bellinger, Tauchman. Cooper DH. Chilly (around 50 degrees) but sunny.
