cade horton put in 4ip 5h 2bb 2k, 2r/er for AA TNS...2nd appearance.  crazy to think this is a guy we could legit expect to see sometime in 2024 even if he's an extreme longshot to break with the team out of spring training.  he turns 22 later this month.

Cade Horton has pitched 53.2 innings in college and 69.1 innings of pro ball.   I fear that if the Cubs rush him to Wrigley next year, he will struggle and fail to reach expectations because he never worked out how to deal with failure at the minor league level.  The Cubs have rushed several MiLB pitchers this year into converting power arms to the bullpen with very mixed results.  Young ones have a natural matriculation clock that goes out a whack when executives force a timeline that does not sync with successful progression through the minors.

Mervis is one example and I have my doubts about his big league future.  Brennan Davis needs another 18 months of good baseball before he is ready to fulfill his potential.  Davis was a basketball player turned baseball future in his draft year.  He needs extra time to mature and I don't think he will get the patience he needs to fully blossom.  I also think Jordan Wicks is being rushed by a half-year.  PCA will not be ready for success at the beginning of 2024.  He has only played pro ball for 1 1/2 years coming from high school.

I think Kyle Schwarber was rushed and he never developed his potential as the best college bat in his draft year.  He settled into early success as a power hitter and learned that HRs = $$$.  He makes great money, but I would not want him at the plate with the game on the line if he was still a Cub.

Everyone wants to see promising talent go quickly to Wrigley Field.  I can speak for AZ Phil in that we are old enough to remember countless, can't miss prospects flame out in Cubbie blue.  I am anxious to see all these guys in Cub uniforms.  I just want to see them at their best when they arrive.  The Cubs are turning the corner at the big league level and need ready-made players to step in a succeed on a winning ball club.  If Hoyer and company think their best Milb talent can finish cooking in Wrigley while the team strives for first place in the central division going forward, they will end up burning a few prospect's best future outcome.

friday game is a stupid Apple TV+ game.  no subscription, no access.  tired of this kind of stuff from MLB.  exclusive access with Apple/Paramount/ESPN and who knows what's coming in the future...as if people are out there paying $1000 a month with the 50 or so streaming services while also having cable TV.

Only way to make this fair is for each streaming service to provide sport packages (better yet, individual team packages) instead of having to purchase full subscription.

It'll come back on these providers hard if they don't do something like this. Apple+ won't make the money they want and they'll drop MLB completely.

The only sport that can do something like this is the NFL. They did well with DirecTV. And they'll do even better with YouTube TV.

mlb.com reworked their top-100 rankings...#12 - PCA, #30 - cade horton, #69 - owen caissie, #77 - kevin alcantara, #92 - ben brown...5 guys in the top 100, 4 coming from trades

Given that the Cubs were buyers and not sellers at the trade deadline and that they did not acquire any veteran relievers for the pen, I think it's likely that we will see some combination of Tyler Duffey, Shane Greene, and/or Stephen Gonsalves (all three are presently at AAA Iowa) and (if healthy) Brad Boxberger -- plus the possibility of a potential waiver claim -- replacing Wesneski, Palencia, and Kilian in the near future.

And again, MLB active roster limits expand from 26 to 28 on 9/1, and clubs - MUST - add two players (it is not optional), and only one of the two can be a pitcher, so the Cubs will almost certainly have 14 pitchers on the active list roster by 9/1.

wow...wainwright gave up 8 runs in a 1 inning outing.  he's currently rocking a 8.78 ERA and 2.09 WHIP in 16 starts.  2 games from 200 career wins...

cubs win!  top of the 9th run and alzolay shuts it down.  he's thrown 36 pitches the past 2 days.  reds game postponed, brewers evening game.

Reds rained out.

This was a really entertaining game. Meaningful August baseball is great stuff. On to the Pink! Concert at Wrigley tonight.

Mr. Phil,

Have you seen Zyhir Hope in person at all?

He hit his 2nd HR in ACL action today.

Just curious

Childersb3…not Phil but I was at the ACL Cubs game today and saw Zyhir Hope for the second time. He is someone to get excited about. Sweet left hand swing, excellent plate discipline and great baseball instincts. He has  a well developed physique that will get better over time. On top of everything else, I spoke with him after both games and he’s a very nice young man who seems very humble.  I’m surprised (pleasantly) that they could draft him where they did and sign him for what they did.

Crunch…MLBTR article says Jonathan India is out at least until September with his left foot plantar fasciitis.

“I don’t think this is a reason to completely panic,” Taillon said.

fine...i'll panic 75-80% of my total panic capacity.

This week we will see how important a favorable schedule is. Two off days plus Cubs face WSux-Royals at home and Brewers have only today as an off day and face  Dodgers-Rangers on the road. The usual Cubbery disclaimers apply.

I hope that Perlaza goes on to have a successful career.  On most Cubs teams prior to the current administration, he would have been one of their more highly ranked prospects.  As far as the others are concerned, one or more may well go on to be much better than expected, but unfortunately there is no way to tell which one at the present time.  You can't keep everyone.

Another one of the nine Cubs post-2023 Rule 9 minor league 6YFA has signed, as RHP Carlos Guzman (acquired from the Tigers for Zack McKinstry at the end of Spring Training) signed a 2024 minor league contract with the Mets.

So RHRP Yovanny Cruz (SD), C-INF P. J. Higgins (CIN), and now Carlos Guzman (NYM) have already signed 2024 minor league contracts with new MLB organizations, and OF Yonathan Perlaza is headed for Korea (Hanhwa Eagles).
