Cubs @ Rangers: Game Thread (Game 2)

The Cubs resume their 2024 campaign following a day off in which to MRI Justin Steele's left hamstring and to process the bottom of the 10th loss to the Rangers. Kyle Hendricks brings his veteran wiles to bear against the Texas Rangers in game two of the season.

2023 was a solid rebound for the longest tenured Cub. He put up a sub-4 ERA following two seasons marred by injury and diminished results. He also kept the ball in play more often and decreased his walk rate but posted the lowest strikeout rate he's had outside of his 13-game debut season. With Steele soon to join Taillon in the IL and the Cubs already dipping into their rotation depth, they could really use some vintage Hendricks in the early going.

Lefty Cody Bradford gets the start for the Rangers. He debuted in 2023, making eight starts and 12 relief appearances adding up to a 5.30 ERA in 56 innings pitched. Like the veteran he'll be opposing, Bradford is a command first pitcher whose best pitch is a changeup. He's been a fairly extreme flyball pitcher in both the minors and majors so far.

Join us for game two of the regular season this Saturday, March 30, at 6:05 pm central.

he's a player's player and a lot of teams would take him on a single-season option at that price.

i think a lot of us were hoping he'd be traded, but the cubs quickly signaled they wanted him around.  i'm rooting for him, but i was hoping he would have been shifted, even for a mid-level return.

he's late-career dan haren on his best days the past few years.  meh.

I think Kyle got a 16mil club option. And Jed gave him that directly after Stro opted out.

I (as well as many others) were hoping for Kyle to go via FA or trade along with Smyly.

That could've cleared over 20mil (probably would've had to send some cash along with Smyly).

Oh well. Let's hope they can both keep their ERAs under 4.50

jd isn't a doctor, but he just said steele is expected to be out "at least through the month of april."

ow.  evidently this is based on comments by counsell to the press pre-game.

liner off the glove of morel with bases loaded and 0 outs...following a similar one (hit harder) clanking off swanson...

...and another run in after clanking one off ben brown's leg.

Okay, this is completly off the discussion. I have noticed several times that organist John Benedeck has been  playing a phrase from the first movement of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana ("O Fortuna"). He has done some hilariously hip music for opposing players over the last couple of years (succeeding the immortal Gary Pressey), but I don't get this one. I ask the very diverse TCR community to help me out! What's the connection? I can't find any pattern, but maybe it's for two-strike counts. ("O, Fortuna")

i say we rip the bandaid off.

hendricks pitches every inning, every day, every a row...until he's on the IL.

Steele will throw 3 live innings in AZ on Friday.

Seiya did "light" baseball activities today.

We just need to hang in for a couple of weeks

dude threw 4 innings of 4 run ball and lowered his ERA...improvement!

but yeah, i'm done.  there's a guy with 2 pitches in the pen named ben brown that seems to be doing a bit better than hendricks's 2 pitches. your leg, bro?

For the love of baseball and all that's holy, please - no more Kyle Hendricks.

hendricks still gets some K's, but dude is just throwing complex batting practice.

sometimes it gets hit where a glove happens to be, sometimes it isn't.

    two pitches, both hittable.

No Happ. Not sure if he’s still just day to day. Amaya catching Hendricks. Busch hitting cleanup.  OF is Canario, Bellinger, Tauchman. Cooper DH. Chilly (around 50 degrees) but sunny.
