Cubs @ Rangers: Game Thread (Game 3)

Jordan Wicks looks to pick up the 0-2 Cubs following an 11-2 loss. The lefty made six strong starts for the big league squad in 2023 and one disappointing outing to end the season. He generally met expectations, commanding the strike zone and mixing a respectable fastball with a great changeup. Having lost Justin Steele to a hamstring strain and then seeing Kyle Hendricks leave game two in the 4th inning, the Cubs would surely use a carrying performance from a starting pitcher. Wicks should benefit from the Rangers having never matched up with him before.

Cubs hitters will be facing Jon Gray. Gray is on the third year of a four year contract with the Rangers. While he's never matched the hopes for him when he was drafted third, behind Kris Bryant, he's been a remarkably consistent mid rotation starter. He's maintained his mid to high 90s fastball over the years and has benefitted from getting out of the Colorado BABIP environment. He's also made his changeup a more prominent feature of his arsenal in recent years and has slightly imcreased his slider usage, in keeping with the league-wide trend.

The Cubs will travel to Chicago for the home opener to start the week. Ben Brown debuted Saturday night and could be in line to make his first big league start in Chicago later in the week if they do not choose to skip a spot in the rotation.

errors and could-have-been errors that were counted as hits have played a big role in the first 3 games.

though there was only 1 error charged in the first 2 games, that was official scoring being -very- nice to the home team hitters.

bases loaded...and they send masterboney up to pinch hit.

is it 2023?  is that david ross with a mask on in the dugout?

So far Counsell has done a pretty good job imitating (vindicating?) Ross. Madrigal starting opening day, Smyly pitching in extras, Brown coming up in relief, Mastro PHing, etc. Which I think suggests some combination of the FO influencing decision making, and these decisions being generally not as dumb as people thought (unless Counsell is also dumb despite having hair).

watching the rangers blow the game in the 9th is some good baseball therapy.

cubs taking 1 of 3 with all the defensive miscues isn't that bad.  game 1 could have gone either way.

hopefully the cubs can handle a 4 run lead over the next 3 outs.

one of the reasons i want(ed) a madrigal OR masterboney lineup is for situations like today.

bases loaded, counsell decided to go with a lefty option off the bench (to replace amaya, who was 2-4 on the day)...and that's masterboney.

team is carrying 2 singles-hitting bats with above average infield D.  they're redundant for the team's needs.

Mastrobuoni looks like he’s added some muscle and early in the spring he was driving the ball with some authority. Unfortunately later in spring and in his early at bats it hasn’t played out that way.

Let’s not forget how fragile Madrigal has been so the two of them probably won’t be on the roster together for very long anyway.

As of this AM, Opening day weather forecast at Wrigley on April 1st…

Temp 48 degrees, 50% chance of rain by 3pm (about the 5th inning).

Been there, done that.

Okay, this is completly off the discussion. I have noticed several times that organist John Benedeck has been  playing a phrase from the first movement of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana ("O Fortuna"). He has done some hilariously hip music for opposing players over the last couple of years (succeeding the immortal Gary Pressey), but I don't get this one. I ask the very diverse TCR community to help me out! What's the connection? I can't find any pattern, but maybe it's for two-strike counts. ("O, Fortuna")

i say we rip the bandaid off.

hendricks pitches every inning, every day, every game...in a row...until he's on the IL.

Steele will throw 3 live innings in AZ on Friday.

Seiya did "light" baseball activities today.

We just need to hang in for a couple of weeks

    bleh.  cubs lose.

day off tomorrow then it's 16 games in a row with no break.

dude threw 4 innings of 4 run ball and lowered his ERA...improvement!

but yeah, i'm done.  there's a guy with 2 pitches in the pen named ben brown that seems to be doing a bit better than hendricks's 2 pitches.

    steele...how your leg, bro?

For the love of baseball and all that's holy, please - no more Kyle Hendricks.

hendricks still gets some K's, but dude is just throwing complex batting practice.

sometimes it gets hit where a glove happens to be, sometimes it isn't.

    two pitches, both hittable.

No Happ. Not sure if he’s still just day to day. Amaya catching Hendricks. Busch hitting cleanup.  OF is Canario, Bellinger, Tauchman. Cooper DH. Chilly (around 50 degrees) but sunny.
