Cubs Triple Time It at Sloan Park

Yeison Santana belted a triple into the right-centerfield alley and scored in the 5th, Ed Howard smashed a line-drive triple off the LF fence and scored on the 6th, Jairo Diaz smacked a two-run triple to right in the 8th, and SP Jackson Ferris and RP Gleiber Morales each hurled three innings of shutout ball, as the Cubs defeated the Diamondbacks Red Squad 5-1 in Cactus League Extended Spring Training game action Friday afternoon at Sloan Park in Mesa, AZ.

The game was extended an extra half-inning so that all of the Cubs pitchers who were scheduled to throw in the game could get their work.

Prior to the game, Brailyn Marquez, Kenyi Perez, Jordan Holloway, Stephen Gonsalves, Mathew Peters, and JP Wheat threw bullpen side sessions on the 12-pack, and Drew Gray, Joel Sierra, Max Bain, and Wilbur Rodriguez threw "live" BP on Field #6.

In his "live" BP, Drew Gray threw one "inning" (20 pitches - 14 strikes, including three called strikes, three swing & miss, six foul balls, and two balls in play, both pop flies). He threw nothing but FB.

In EXST Cubs roster news, OF Cristian More has been moved-up to Lo-A Myrtle Beach. In nine Cactus League EXST games, More played all three outfield positions over the course of the nine games, and hit 316/350/526 with a double and a HR, two RBI, one run scored, one BB (5% walk rate), two K (10% K-rate), and two SB (no CS).

m.amaya is putting on a nice display with the bat in AA (.275/.412/.700) in 51 PA.  he's playing a bit of 1st along with the catching duties.  the only knock on his game so far is he's only thrown out 3 of 20 baserunners trying to steal off him.  he's been much better than this in the past.

still, 5 doubles and 4 homers in 51 PA.  looking forward to him moving up to AAA and seeing what he can do there.

if torrens doesn't make it through waivers and someone snags him, amaya could see the bigs even sooner than expected in case of injury.  torrens isn't a very good defender and his bat hasn't been hot, so i would kinda be surprised if someone does snag him.

Phil, since Torrens was DFAd within the first 30 days of the season, are the Cubs still on the hook for his entire $1,200,000 salary?

GEORGE A: The Cubs are on the hook for his entire 2023 salary unless Torrens gets claimed off waivers by another MLB club - OR - he gets outrighted and then elects free-agency (he is an Article XX-D player, so he has the right to elect free agency after being outrighted, or he can accept the outright assignment and defer free agency until after the conclusion of the MLB regular season).

the SF/SD game in Mexico City is running a bit long with small delays and high scoring.  there's a bit of a question from the announcers if the stadium lights are adequate enough to actually light the field if the game runs long enough to be in the dark.

I hope that Perlaza goes on to have a successful career.  On most Cubs teams prior to the current administration, he would have been one of their more highly ranked prospects.  As far as the others are concerned, one or more may well go on to be much better than expected, but unfortunately there is no way to tell which one at the present time.  You can't keep everyone.

Another one of the nine Cubs post-2023 Rule 9 minor league 6YFA has signed, as RHP Carlos Guzman (acquired from the Tigers for Zack McKinstry at the end of Spring Training) signed a 2024 minor league contract with the Mets.

So RHRP Yovanny Cruz (SD), C-INF P. J. Higgins (CIN), and now Carlos Guzman (NYM) have already signed 2024 minor league contracts with new MLB organizations, and OF Yonathan Perlaza is headed for Korea (Hanhwa Eagles).

...and back to 3rd for another game.  at this point i'm gonna hang back and when/if he actually plays 1st then i'll find it notable.  i am glad he's playing a good amount of 3rd, though...give the club one more good look at him there.  shrug
