Anyone think Smyly doesn't opt in to his 2nd yr for next season? I think with his escalators his earned from this season he'd get ~11mil next year.
He'd have to compete for a SP role, but will probably have to settle for bullpen.
Maybe a trade is possible to a team that needs to eat innings (especially if Jed eats some of the salary)?
He hasn't been bad out of the bullpen for this recent stretch.

Tidbit from today’s Tribune article. The last Cub lefty to throw at least 8 innings and 12 K’s… (hint: it’s been awhile):

Ken Holtzman

c.zambrano threw out the 1st pitch.  so glad to see him and the team "made up."  he's been back to the park multiple times the past few years.

i know some people didn't like him, but i was a big fan.  everyone wanted wood + prior to be the guys that got it done, but Z was the one who managed to show up to pitch a full or nearly-full season.

i understand why "mad Z" and similar is his image because the dude could meltdown on an epic level.  my personal favorite was him throwing the ump out of the game during an argument (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HD72rUaUvPQ).  there was a lot more "fun Z" than "mad Z" though...just saying...

That was my favorite Z moment too:  Zambrano 1, Watercooler 0.
2nd place: when Z got tossed for giving the home plate ump the eyeglasses sign after getting a bad call.

Nothing like watching a September playoff run. Phils lose at SD. Cubs now 1.5 behind them and 2.5 behind Brewers.
Phils schedule is currently tough with 3 MIA then 7 w ATL before an easier wrap up with Mets-Pirates.

Seeding will matter in the WC round as 3-4 seeds will get all 3 games at home.

There it is: Luke Little  (6’ 8” lefty) gets the call up per Tommy Birch of Des Moines Register. Last 40 man spot now filled. Somewhere, Sean Marshall approves.

Gotcha Crunch and AZ Phil.

I still don't agree with Canario being up for the month and just sitting there.
He missed over half the season. He needs reps. Even if he's been in AAA last year and did well this year.
And they plan on sending him to AFL.
It just seems weird for him to watch baseball for three weeks.
I'm sure he's enjoying his well paid vacation.
I hope this isn't a personality test or something.
Like how does he handle himself? Does he complain when not playing?
How does he get along with the veterans?

I still don't understand what was the point of signing Greene, seeing him have multiple successful starts at Iowa, then bringing him up and not using him as a starter during the doubleheader and then also barely using him at any time before we DFA'd him, during a stretch where multiple current Cubs relievers are struggling.  Why even bother signing him in the first place?

Closer: Alzolay
High Lev: Merryweather - Leiter - Cuas
Mid level: Wesneski - Smyly - Palencia
Low Level: Keegan - Little
Leiter lost his Splitter the last three appearances. Couldn't finish an inning vs Brewers, Reds or Giants.
Ben Brown for someone is intriguing. He has better stuff than Keegan. They throw the same style of pitches, but Brown's stuff is better quality.
We'll see !!

AZ Phil,

I am working on a theory about Canario that I want to run past you to see if it is plausible.  Cubs called Canario up when the rosters expanded, but have him sitting on the bench during the most crucial part of the season.  Rookie ML salaries are $720,000 paid out over 14 paychecks.  One paycheck is $51,428.  Clearly, the extra position player for September is not as critical for the Cubs as a 14th pitcher.

My theory:  Canario will play in the Arizona Fall league.  Afterwards, the Cubs want him to stay in Arizona to work with staff, closely monitor his progress and complete the healing process of his injuries as broken bones take a year to fully mend.  The Cubs do not want Canario to play winter ball and are using the MLB money as a reward / inducement to appease his desire to play "home ball."  I suspect 10-14 days of MLB money is more than a winter league season's worth of paychecks.

Phil, is this a reasonable scenario?

after going 25-1 in sb/cs for amaya, he's 2 for 2 in his last 2 games for cs.  that's a very good sign.

jeff garlin in the booth.  *frantic scrambling for mute on remote*  oh good, he's just there to sing the 7th and not hang around.

canario gets a standing O when he comes to the plate.  even casual fans seem to know he hasn't appeared yet.

Win puts pressure on the Phils vs Padres in late afternoon game…Cubs currently just a game behind em.

Wow, sweeping (or losing, in the Giants case) a Sept series against a potential playoff competitor. Giants must be wondering what just hit them.

I hope that Perlaza goes on to have a successful career.  On most Cubs teams prior to the current administration, he would have been one of their more highly ranked prospects.  As far as the others are concerned, one or more may well go on to be much better than expected, but unfortunately there is no way to tell which one at the present time.  You can't keep everyone.

Another one of the nine Cubs post-2023 Rule 9 minor league 6YFA has signed, as RHP Carlos Guzman (acquired from the Tigers for Zack McKinstry at the end of Spring Training) signed a 2024 minor league contract with the Mets.

So RHRP Yovanny Cruz (SD), C-INF P. J. Higgins (CIN), and now Carlos Guzman (NYM) have already signed 2024 minor league contracts with new MLB organizations, and OF Yonathan Perlaza is headed for Korea (Hanhwa Eagles).

...and back to 3rd for another game.  at this point i'm gonna hang back and when/if he actually plays 1st then i'll find it notable.  i am glad he's playing a good amount of 3rd, though...give the club one more good look at him there.  shrug
