Cubs vs. Royals: Series Thread (Games 121-123)

The Cubs escaped a two-game sweep by virtue of heroics from Morel's walk-off three-run shot and three consecutive strikeouts from Michael Fulmer. They will continue without Marcus Stroman, whose timeline for return is now a known unknown. They take on the Royals at Wrigley next. See below for matchups.

Game 121, Friday, August 18, 1:20 pm central
CHC: RHP Jameson Taillon (7-7, 5.71 ERA)
KC: LHP Cole Ragans (3-4, 4.21 ERA)

Game 122, Saturday, August 19, 1:20 pm central
CHC: LHP Justin Steele (13-3, 2.79 ERA)
KC: RHP Brady Singer (8-8, 4.91 ERA)

Game 123, Sunday, August 20, 1:20 pm central
CHC: RHP Kyle Hendricks (4-6, 4.00 ERA)
KC: RHP Jordan Lyles (3-13, 3.60 ERA)

cubs pick up edwin uceta from the mets off waivers...assigned to AAA, on the 40-man (no corresponding move, open space).  not much worth mentioning about him.  he falls in line with various recent pen pickups, high Ks, high walks.

On day 1 of 27 games in 27 days, not horrible to add some arms that can go up/down.  Even if he can be lg avg or slightly below.  Suddenly a bit short on those.... Thompson & Estrada are out of whack.  Killian is still an enigma.  Ben Brown is injured.  That leaves Rucker & Kay on the DSM shuttle.

thompson is an extremely routine-based guy and an extremely hard worker.  having him play long man, no wait setup, no wait cleanup, no wait starter, no wait...is a waste.  2023 has been a disaster.  even if he starts 2024 in AAA, let him go every 5 days and see what you got left in him.

3 more years of taillon, huh...hmm...wow.  also, no more wisdom at 1st...he has 1 error, but 2 blown plays today and both have resulted in runs.

Wisdom needs to get his groove back as well. He has options & we now have a 3B, so there are at least 3 other players at AAA who I would rather have as the last guy on the bench (or would be curious to see what they can do).  Wisdom has talent & when "on" he can carry the team, so I'd rather try to get him PA's to get him right to maximize the potential for him to go 2015-postseason-Jorge-Soler down the stretch.

we really putting an ex-KC pitcher with sketchy vulnerabilities up there vs KC bats that got a full in-depth scouting report on the dude?  a'ite...it's only a 1 run game, i guess.

It took an amazing pick of a way outside fastball out of the dirt by Gomes to prevent that runner at third from scoring - unbelievable play. And now two games in a row that Cuas has uncorked crazy wild pitches with a runner on base (almost a third but for the Gomes pick).

Cuas rapidly falling out of the circle of trust.

cubs never had a lead that was commanding, but this loss still stings.

more hits than KC, more walks than KC...only scored runs in 1 inning.

angels have called up nolan schanuel from AA and he's in the lineup tonight leading off.  they drafted him 6 weeks ago.

MLBTR updates Stroman’s status and it sounds like he’s shut down and will be  out for weeks which means probably the regular season at a minimum (no number specified). Certainly no good news on that front.

Some quotes: “I can’t be too active,” Stroman said. “It’s not like I can do too much right now. I’ve talked to several doctors and I guess the best thing is it has to kind of heal itself. Hopefully a few weeks. I can’t go anywhere. I can barely turn right now. Breathing is tough at some points, to sit for long periods of time is pretty difficult.

so nice to have alzolay closing...3 more years club control, too.  he hasn't slumped this year.  his worst month (july) was still a banger.

Squaring up Hendricks so far today. Every ball in the first inning has been put in play at over 95mph so far.

Plus Brown and Horton, I think you can feel pretty good about that group on paper. It’s actually pretty nice to be able to go into the year with 4 veterans locked down and another 4-5 guys in line for the 5th spot and as depth.

Though I’d also guess you could see some trades for pitching of some sort out of some of the Cubs’ minor league depth.

Weird things do happen, though, and one season isn’t reliable as proof about anything for the next one. Remember how Keegan Thompson was going to be our lockdown multi inning reliever this year? And how Adrian Sampson “proved” he was going to be part of our starting pitcher depth this year? Heck, Jim Hickman had a career  year where he batted over.300 with 32HR and over 100 ribbies. Never came close to those kind of numbers again. Tommie Herr in 1985? Now I’m just rambling. But players have blips. It doesn’t mean they will sustain it.

How good a manager is Counsell? Brews seem to have lots of turnover year to year but he always has them hanging tough.

I hope that Perlaza goes on to have a successful career.  On most Cubs teams prior to the current administration, he would have been one of their more highly ranked prospects.  As far as the others are concerned, one or more may well go on to be much better than expected, but unfortunately there is no way to tell which one at the present time.  You can't keep everyone.

Another one of the nine Cubs post-2023 Rule 9 minor league 6YFA has signed, as RHP Carlos Guzman (acquired from the Tigers for Zack McKinstry at the end of Spring Training) signed a 2024 minor league contract with the Mets.

So RHRP Yovanny Cruz (SD), C-INF P. J. Higgins (CIN), and now Carlos Guzman (NYM) have already signed 2024 minor league contracts with new MLB organizations, and OF Yonathan Perlaza is headed for Korea (Hanhwa Eagles).

...and back to 3rd for another game.  at this point i'm gonna hang back and when/if he actually plays 1st then i'll find it notable.  i am glad he's playing a good amount of 3rd, though...give the club one more good look at him there.  shrug
