Cubs vs. White Sox: Series Thread (Games 119-120)

The Cubs return to Wrigley to face their cross town rivals. They've made up a ton of ground in the last few weeks and have a forgiving schedule ahead of them before facing the Brewers and Reds when the calendar turns over toward September. Marcus Stroman is expected back for the second game but has not been activated as of my writing. See below for matchups such as they stand.

Game 119, Tuesday, August 15, 7:05 pm central
CHW: RHP Touki Toussaint (1-5, 4.27 ERA)
CHC: RHP Kyle Hendricks (4-6, 3.96 ERA)

Game 120, Wednesday, August 16, 7:05 pm central
CHW: RHP Mike Clevinger (5-5, 3.55 ERA)
CHC: TBA

this middle infield is going to ruin baseball for me.  this must be what it was like for cubs fan to live through years of glenn beckert and don kessinger...only swanson/hoerner both provide much better bat production.

reds finally get rid of luke weaver.  no idea why the hell a team trying to compete to win wouldn't have gotten rid of him months ago.

StrOman MRI shows a rib cage cartilage fracture. It’s a variant of an oblique muscle injury but the imaging shows a signal in the cartilage and not the adjacent oblique muscle between ribs. Sometimes it’s more of an injury to the area where the rib attaches to the cartilage. Small Cartilage tears occur in other areas like the AC joint (shoulder) and Wrist (triangular fibrocartilage) and are slow to heal.  It might be weeks before they let him ramp up his throwing but that’s with the disclaimer that I only know what is being reported and a treatment plan is based on exam and imaging details. The media blurb says “no timeline for his return.”

Between the domestic abuse allegations, the stupid twichy windup and the hair/tats/alligator skin belt and accessories, I am really irritated by watching Clevinger shutout the Cubs so far this evening. He looks like he deserves bad things to happen to him.

Just my opinion.

there's a reason him and trevor bauer got along so well...

even tossing aside the lawsuit thing that got him bounced off the dodgers...bauer was basically given away from ARZ to get him away from the rest of the clubhouse spreading his toxicity and unwillingness to be coached.  then bauer was basically given away again when CIN decided they could trade their problem children for each other (remember y.puig?).

terrible people with terrible takes on life while they think others can't deal with how "real" they are.

also, eastbound and down is funny as hell, but also crude...which is funny...  season 1 is great if you don't watch any more of it.  if it's not funny to you after the 1st episode it probably won't get better for you.  they came out of the gate running, no feeling out characters or story direction.

cubs fans out here feeling cubs pitching getting out of the 8th with the bases loaded, 0 out, and 0 runs scored.

the team is down by 3 with 6 outs left to play and they're cheering for this like the cubs had a lead.

I just love it when that pantsless bear comes running out on the field with that “W” flag!

Lefty reliever Richard Bleier signed and gets a test run at Iowa. In other news, throwing spaghetti at the wall can be messy.

hector gomez (high end baseball source/insider in the dominican) says there's more than 1 complaint by a minor currently in the legal system vs wander franco...his playing days may be over at age 22 with $176m left on his contract.

I hope that Perlaza goes on to have a successful career.  On most Cubs teams prior to the current administration, he would have been one of their more highly ranked prospects.  As far as the others are concerned, one or more may well go on to be much better than expected, but unfortunately there is no way to tell which one at the present time.  You can't keep everyone.

Another one of the nine Cubs post-2023 Rule 9 minor league 6YFA has signed, as RHP Carlos Guzman (acquired from the Tigers for Zack McKinstry at the end of Spring Training) signed a 2024 minor league contract with the Mets.

So RHRP Yovanny Cruz (SD), C-INF P. J. Higgins (CIN), and now Carlos Guzman (NYM) have already signed 2024 minor league contracts with new MLB organizations, and OF Yonathan Perlaza is headed for Korea (Hanhwa Eagles).

...and back to 3rd for another game.  at this point i'm gonna hang back and when/if he actually plays 1st then i'll find it notable.  i am glad he's playing a good amount of 3rd, though...give the club one more good look at him there.  shrug
