KB KOs Fans on the Farm

I’ve been up pretty close at the KB circus here in Des Moines this week. After watching Tuesday night and yesterday afternoon from the camera well adjacent to the I-Cub dugout while our hero played 3B, I am hoping to perch in the LF corner this afternoon since he is penciled in at that spot and hitting leadoff today. Impressions so far: He is so damn disciplined at the plate! Not much glove-work at the hot corner; yesterday he swallowed an MLB popup off the bat of the game’s first hitter, fielded throws flawlessly to start a few rounds of the horn on Ks w/ no one on base, and recorded another PO on a PO of a baserunner adrift between 2nd and 3rd. As prodigious as his baseball talents may be his people skills. The kid knows how to handle himself. He’s as patient signing autos as he is at the plate. I think he’ll clout one today to remember him by and then be gone, leaving the I-Cubs to finish a season in which they are, so far, undefeated w/ him on the roster and 47-85 without him. Duensing, by the way, pitched well yesterday, if anybody cares. I’ve been up pretty close at the KB circus here in Des Moines this week. Bizarre - missing words in the post magically reappear when I try to edit them back in. I give up. Something is always amiss. Not much glove-work at the hot corner, is what I tried to say.

Cubs trade Gimenez to the Twins for C Bobby Wilson. Wilson is currently on the DL. Mazzoni DFA.

Bobby Wilson (sprained ankle) was placed on the Twins 10-day DL on 8/24, so he will be eligible to be reinstated on Monday 8/3. (Days spent on the previous club's DL counts toward the minimum number of days a traded player must spend on the DL).

Since the MLB Active List ("25-man roster") expands to a maximum of 40 players on September 1st, no corresponding roster move on the Cubs MLB Active List will be required when B. Wilson is reinstated from the DL.

ohtani cleared to start for LAA on sunday.

so stoked he's getting to play as a true 2-way player.  he may not be at his best freshly cleared to pitch this sunday, but a guy who can do what he can do on the mound and with a bat...at age 23...wow.

given that they gave him up with club control left for a slightly better D catcher with slightly less bat upside compared to gimenez, the cubs probably didn't see a future for him on the 40-man going forward.  *shrug* dunno...  going by the numbers he wasn't exceptionally awful, but he was underperforming for a 28 year old in AAA.

The Cubs added Wilson as an emergency catcher, which is protocol.

Someone had to get thwacked. Iowa's season isn't completed. I wish there was another way, but who else was going to "get it"?

Line up Mazzoni's numbers against most guys getting DFAd, he's rather good. Baseball myopia tends to ignore who other teams thwack.

I hope that Perlaza goes on to have a successful career.  On most Cubs teams prior to the current administration, he would have been one of their more highly ranked prospects.  As far as the others are concerned, one or more may well go on to be much better than expected, but unfortunately there is no way to tell which one at the present time.  You can't keep everyone.

Another one of the nine Cubs post-2023 Rule 9 minor league 6YFA has signed, as RHP Carlos Guzman (acquired from the Tigers for Zack McKinstry at the end of Spring Training) signed a 2024 minor league contract with the Mets.

So RHRP Yovanny Cruz (SD), C-INF P. J. Higgins (CIN), and now Carlos Guzman (NYM) have already signed 2024 minor league contracts with new MLB organizations, and OF Yonathan Perlaza is headed for Korea (Hanhwa Eagles).

...and back to 3rd for another game.  at this point i'm gonna hang back and when/if he actually plays 1st then i'll find it notable.  i am glad he's playing a good amount of 3rd, though...give the club one more good look at him there.  shrug
