Roederer and Howard Provide the Power for Cubs at American Family Fields

Cole Roederer belted a solo HR in the top of the 2nd inning and collected another RBI on a FC in the 6th, Ed Howard singled and scored in the 1st and smacked a solo HR in the 5th, and SP Carlos Garcia hurled three innings of one-hit shutout ball with four strikeouts for the Cubs, and Reidy Mercado (RBI double) and Jason Ollarve (two-run triple) drilled run scoring hits for the Brewers in a three-run 8th, as the two teams played to a 5-5 tie in a Cactus League Extended Spring Training game played Thursday morning on Field #3 at American Family Fields in Phoenix, AZ.

Recently called up from the Cubs Dominican Academy, RHP Gabriel Agrazal made his U. S. stateside debut in the game. His swing & miss pitch is a - VERY - slow CV that almost looks like an "eephus" pitch.

In EXST Cubs roster news, C-INF Bryce Windham has completed his brief rehab at Extended Spring Training and has been reinstated by the Iowa Cubs. (He played in only one EXST game). Also, C Tim Susnara (on AA Tennessee 60-day IL) has been released. (Susnara was the catcher for most of the "live" BP outings thrown by Kyle Hendricks and Codi Heuer at Sloan Park when they were at Extended Spring Training).

Here is the abridged box score from the game (Cubs players only):

EXST CUBS LINEUP:

DJL: The Cubs are attempting to create a stable of "Nasty Boyz" from within so that they don't have to sign a FA closer or trade for one. Not all of the high-leverage candidates will work out, so best course of action is to cast a wide net, keep an open mind, and see what develops.

Patience and fungibility is an important aspect of this process, so that the candidates can be moved back & forth between MLB and AAA as needed while they are developing.

Remember, the best closers in Cubs history (Bruce Sutter and Lee Smith) were developed from within.

I hope that Perlaza goes on to have a successful career.  On most Cubs teams prior to the current administration, he would have been one of their more highly ranked prospects.  As far as the others are concerned, one or more may well go on to be much better than expected, but unfortunately there is no way to tell which one at the present time.  You can't keep everyone.

Another one of the nine Cubs post-2023 Rule 9 minor league 6YFA has signed, as RHP Carlos Guzman (acquired from the Tigers for Zack McKinstry at the end of Spring Training) signed a 2024 minor league contract with the Mets.

So RHRP Yovanny Cruz (SD), C-INF P. J. Higgins (CIN), and now Carlos Guzman (NYM) have already signed 2024 minor league contracts with new MLB organizations, and OF Yonathan Perlaza is headed for Korea (Hanhwa Eagles).
