Rojas Brings the Thunder and Palencia Brings the Heat to Salt River Fields

Jefferson Rojas slugged a solo HR in the top of the 1st, singled, stole two bases, and scored a run in the 5th, singled in the 7th, and blasted a two-run HR in the 8th, Christopher Paciolla singled, reached base on an HBP, and drilled a two-run double in the 8th, and Jairo Diaz singled twice, walked, and scored two runs, as the Cubs outlasted the Diamondbacks Red Squad 11-8 in Cactus League Extended Spring Training game action Monday morning on Whirlwind Field at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick, east of Scottsdale, AZ.

The game was pre-planned as an eight inning contest and was called with one out in the bottom of the 8th inning.

RHP Zach Davies (on Diamondbacks MLB 15-day IL - oblique strain) started the game for the D'backs Red and worked four innings of one hit / one run ball (the first Jefferson Rojas HR). Riquelmin Cabral laced a two-run double, Ruben Santana smacked a two-run triple, and Caleb Roberts belted a solo HR, singled and scored, and reached base on an HBP to aid the D'back cause.

RHRP Daniel Palencia made his first EXST appearance since being placed on the AA Tennessee Development List last week, hurling one shutout inning (issued a walk, then got a pop out to the catcher, then an infield single, and finally two strikeouts - both swinging - to finish the inning), working at a fast pace, and mixing a 99-100 MPH FB and a power-SL.

AZPhil, this Starlyn Pichardo guy seems to find his fair share of work and was the only 18 YO pitcher on the ACL squad last year. What’s he showing that seems to be getting him more opps than others his age in the org?

KKvG: Although none of his pitches are exceptional, Starlyn Pichardo has a SP repertoire (FB 88-91, SL 82-85, CV 70-72, and a mid-80's CH). He is the most stretched-out of any of the EXST SP (he threw 68 pitches yesterday), but I doubt that he will go to Myrtle Beach until he throws more strikes.

The thing about Luis Rujano and Dominic Hambley (the two EXST SP who were recently promoted to Myrtle Beach) is that they threw 61% strikes (Hambley) and 62% strikes (Rujano) in Cactus League EXST games.

Even with his being stretched out and with a starter's repertoire, Pichardo is still throwing exactly 50% strikes. While he will continue to get starts in EXST games and next month in the ACL, but he will need to throw a much higher percentage of strikes before he will move up.

I hope that Perlaza goes on to have a successful career.  On most Cubs teams prior to the current administration, he would have been one of their more highly ranked prospects.  As far as the others are concerned, one or more may well go on to be much better than expected, but unfortunately there is no way to tell which one at the present time.  You can't keep everyone.

Another one of the nine Cubs post-2023 Rule 9 minor league 6YFA has signed, as RHP Carlos Guzman (acquired from the Tigers for Zack McKinstry at the end of Spring Training) signed a 2024 minor league contract with the Mets.

So RHRP Yovanny Cruz (SD), C-INF P. J. Higgins (CIN), and now Carlos Guzman (NYM) have already signed 2024 minor league contracts with new MLB organizations, and OF Yonathan Perlaza is headed for Korea (Hanhwa Eagles).
