CHC (91-64): LHP Cole Hamels (9-10, 3.90)
First pitch: 7:05pmCST

Hamels didn't have it on Wednesday in Arizona—to say the least, giving up 7 ER in 6 innings. That was probably bound to happen. He has two wins and twelve scoreless innings against the Pirates this season—and a nice chance to right the ship. Overall, they are 20-78 (.256) against him. Marte is 10-20 with a HR.

Taillon had a tough-luck no-decision against the Royals his last time out (7 IP, 0). He's 1-0 with a 2.84 in two starts against the Cubs this season. For their careers, they are 42-123 (.341) against him. Baez is 10-16 with 2 HR, and Rizzo is 9-18 with 2 HR. That'll do, boys.

Montgomery and Archer tomorrow at the same time.

I've not a clue how to link to it, and it's a low res photo, but my suggestion would be Kris Bryant, with a huge grin on his face, clutching the third out in his glove and preparing to throw to Rizzo;  with Montgomery slightly out of focus in the foreground....

Never fails to evoke a smile.

As most of you know, the Cubs will clinch a playoff spot with a win tonight and a Rockies loss in Denver, but if it happens the Cubs will probably have to hang around the clubhouse while waiting for the Rockies-Phillies game to end. Stock in Binny's up a click today.

strop played catch and did agility drills.

the hopeful plan is for him to get into a game or 2 before the post-season.  they've gotten us hyped about morrow and smyly only to dash those plans...hopefully the strop thing works out.

Fifth straight game against the Pirates scoring a single run via a solo home run. Also special, but not in a particularly good way.

    I hope that Perlaza goes on to have a successful career.  On most Cubs teams prior to the current administration, he would have been one of their more highly ranked prospects.  As far as the others are concerned, one or more may well go on to be much better than expected, but unfortunately there is no way to tell which one at the present time.  You can't keep everyone.

    Another one of the nine Cubs post-2023 Rule 9 minor league 6YFA has signed, as RHP Carlos Guzman (acquired from the Tigers for Zack McKinstry at the end of Spring Training) signed a 2024 minor league contract with the Mets. 

     

    So RHRP Yovanny Cruz (SD), C-INF P. J. Higgins (CIN), and now Carlos Guzman (NYM) have already signed 2024 minor league contracts with new MLB organizations, and OF Yonathan Perlaza is headed for Korea (Hanhwa Eagles).

    morel played SS last night (no errors)...hit a homer and a double.  he's got 2 of both in 19PA.

    e.escobar was throwing 95-97mph on his fastball in 2023.

    One more thing about Edwin Escobar. Even though he had accrued less than one year of MLB Service Time prior to signing with Nippon Ham in 2017 (he ended up eventually with Yokohama), he will have Article XIX-A rights by virtue of the seven seasons he spent in Japan. So he will be essentially locked on the 40-man roster (or at least he can't be outrighted without his consent), and he will be a FA whenever his contract expires.
