3/25 UPDATE: 

The Cubs have optioned RHP Hayden Wesneski and OF Alexander Canario to AAA Iowa, C Joe Hudson has been assigned to Minor League Camp, and C Jorge Alfaro has elected free-agency (he had a contractual opt-out).  

So there are now 30 players ACTIVE at Cubs MLB Spring Training (28 on MLB Reserve List and two NRI). 


3/24 UPDATE: 

RHP Carl Edwards Jr and 1B Dominic Smith have elected free-agency (Edwards had an automatic Article XX-B opt-out, and D. Smith had a contractual opt-out). 


3/22 UPDATE: 

The Cubs have assigned LHP Edwin Escobar to Minor League Camp.

Here are the Cubs pitchers reports from Tuesday afternoon's Cardinals - Cubs game art Sloan Park in Mesa:

COMMENT: Worked three innings plus two batters in the fourth... allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits (six singles and two doubles) walked one, and struck out six (four swinging), with a 1/2 GO/AO... he threw 73 pitches (52 strikes - 10 swing & miss - 19 foul balls)... surrendered one run in the top of the 1st on a one-out double off Cody Bellinger's glove in deep straight-away CF followed one out later by two consecutive two-out bloop singles, allowed two runs (one earned) in the 2nd after retiring the first two hitters (first batter had a nine-pitch AB with four consecutive two-strike foul balls before being retired 3 -U) on a two-out infield single (weak throw on the run by Nico Hoerner), a hard-contact line drive RBI double down the RF line, and an E-1 (missed catch) by Imanaga on what should been an inning-ending 3-1 GO, gave up another run in the 3rd on a two-out walk on a 3-2 pitch and an RBI double to LF, and two consecutive singles leading off the top of the 4th before being relieved (runners were ultimately left stranded)... threw 18 pitches in the 1st inning (14 strikes - two swing & miss, one on FB and the other on a SL - four foul balls), 24 pitches in the 2nd inning (17 strikes - three swing & miss, one on FB, two SPLIT - six foul balls), 19 pitches in the 3rd inning (13 strikes - seven swing & miss, three on SL, two on SPLIT, one on FB - three foul balls), and 12 pitches without retiring a batter in the top of the 4th (8 strikes - no swing & miss - four foul balls)... Imanaga throws a lot of pitches per inning, but it's not because he doesn't throw strikes...  if anything, he throws too many strikes (he threw 70% strikes on Tuesday)... while he gets a ton of swing & miss (and strikeouts), he also induces a lot of foul balls because he doesn't try to make hitters chase his pitches by throwing them out of the strike zone... rather, he uses his very diverse pitch mix to get swing & miss (and lots of foul balls as well)... he also is a fly ball pitcher who will give up more than his share of HR during the course of the season...

COMMENT: Was called up from the AA Tennessee group at Minor League Camp for the day and allowed a hard-contact double on the third pitch of the 7th inning (a 96 MPH FB), and the runner came around to score on a 4-3 GO and a WP... gave up two other loud contact outs (an L-7 and an F-9)... threw 18 pitches (only 10 strikes - only one swing & miss)... stuff is electric but still very raw and he continues to have difficulty commanding it, and while he has the repertoire of a SP, he throws too many pitches-per-inning to be a SP and not enough strikes to be a closer... he is most definitely still a work-in-progress...

FB velo is nowhere near the 96-98 MPH it was a couple of years ago when he was a Top 30 prospect, but his secondaries are better...

Mully and Haugh Chicago Radio says that folks within Cubs front office now believe a Belli ddeal will get done. Also, White Sox wanted to see Wicks, Mervis and Vazquez today for a possible Cease deal. 

That can't be real. But, the Sox have been overpricing Cease.

cease has a 8m deal and 2 years of club control.  he wouldn't be cheap.

dunno if the rumored talent given up is worth it, but if the wsox want a return on cease there's no time like now considering the very low 2024 price tag.

the cheap price incentive for a full year vs. mid-season addition seems like a wash in potential return.

wicks could immediately slot in as a starter on most teams.  also, the cubs already have a couple of solid lefty starters slotted in for at least the next 4 years.

40man roster move needed.

Mervis seems likely to go. 

Mervis, Strumpf, Vazquez, Kilian, Mastro, Almonte, Hodge could all be trade candidates off the 40man. Not saying they'd go all in one deal. Just a list.

Wicks and Triantos still most likely "prospects" to be dealt.

Jed can still improve the roster before the season starts.

If they aren't going young, I'd like them to go for a lot of wins.

Supposed platoon competition for Wisdom.

Peralta and Cooper are interesting vet guys. 

Especially if a trade occurs here soon.

Seems like things are headed that way.

he's not getting any younger.  dude turns 29 in a bit over a week.  they still want him on the roster and 40-man for some reason.

i like what he throws, but at some point you have to show what's coming out of your arm is MLB-quality.

as far as i can tell this isn't injury/rest related, and they've been throwing for weeks.

we're at the point in spring games where throwing 20-40 pitches for multi-inning guys is the norm, and that's not much different than airing out a few dozen on the mound in a non-game training situation.

i wonder if these specific guys are getting additional instruction without working things out vs live batters and they don't want to do that and tax the arms doing both at once.  no idea...not heard anything about these guys or what they're doing in ARZ recently.

now that the bellinger contract is done and we're waiting on the dude to show up in games...

it can be argued that bellinger at 30m a year for 1-2 seasons (or 80m over 3 years) isn't good value.  ...and it probably won't be a good deal.  free agent signings at this level of pay have an extremely high ceiling to realize a return on investment based on numbers and stats, alone.

what it does give, is a specific need for weaknesses of this specific club.  he provides coverage for 2 of the 3 main position weaknesses and he's a lefty bat with pop.

every slot on the team is pretty much solidified except CF, 1st, and 3rd.  bellinger covers CF and 1st adequately and i doubt many people think he couldn't cover either over the next 3 seasons.

the cubs have PCA and busch/mervis at CF and 1st respectively.  the team no longer needs guys at both positions to rise to the occasion.

plus there's the whole DH thing.

this is a gamble, but it's not a thoughtless gamble throwing money at a bat for the sake of having a bat.  he's capable of filling numerous roles the team could use for a short period of time in the prime of his career...even if it could end up he's overpaid for what the club gets from him.

The "value" of a team, in your context, is the price for which it could be sold.  But if it is not sold, it is rather meaningless.  The true value of an ongoing business is the amount of income it generates on an annual basis, and that varies greatly from team to team.  San Diego, a team with a high resale value, had to borrow money in order to pay the team salaries last year, because the income was not sufficient cash flow to keep them afloat.  Many other teams are reported to be producing little profit, even at low salaries.  The larger income teams are often lumped together, but in actual fact, there are only three teams that have "top tier" income, the Dodgers, the Yankees and the Mets.  The Dodgers, for instance, have an estimated total revenue of more than 200 million dollars than that of the Cubs.  That means that, assuming non player-salaries are roughly equal, the Dodgers can pay 199 million dollars more than the Cubs (they don't) and still make more profit.  Without the luxury tax, no one could compete with the top three teams, without relying on the randomness of short series baseball to equalize the playoffs.

Thank you Bill for your well written response to an on-going, misunderstood debate about salaries and wealth.  Fans and tax payers are responsible for all revenue generated by sports teams.  Scott Boras started this narrative years ago about team value justifies player salaries.  Just once, I would like an owner tell Boras he will sell his team so he can pay the salaries of his players.

it keeps me up at night and destroys my will to live to imagine the Ricketts family only making 20-30m a year rather than 40-60m a year off the Cubs.

it is absolutely not fair at all to consider all the real estate and advertising they've put up all over Wrigleyville that also brings money that isn't assigned to the team revenues.

i'm 110% sure those rooftops they bought would bring in tons of revenue even without the Cubs playing baseball there.  $70-$100 a seat to watch the Chicago skyline from a roof for 3 hours...no brainer, team not needed...it's just a great place to hang out for a few hours and a reasonable price to do it.

it would be nice if they could get a TV network.  they could take the local games off of free local TV...maybe further monetize it by charging locals $20 a month to watch the games if they don't have cable.  they should get on that.

i'm not even over here advocating spending like they're the yanks/dodgers.  nor do i think they're criminally cheap.  i feel like they've done good with the payroll in 2024 (so far), but i don't think they'd be financially squeezed if they threw another 20+ million at it...but i don't expect it.

the whole idea of this team barely scraping by while they've monetized the entire neighborhood based upon the product on the field isn't a narrative i'll entertain.

since the 1980s, buying a professional sports team is about it's increasing value and the ability to borrow against the asset...no one's trying to make rent or get fed on the operating revenue profits.  even teams with terrible owners that neglect the team benefit from this.

Well said, Crunch. Every point is spot on perfect. And even if Ricketts allowed Hoyer to go all the way to the next AAV Level ($257M), it's $4,000,000!! For one damn year. He's got $80M+ coming off next year. Wonder what Blake Snell on an opt out deal would do for Cubs playoff chances this yeat. It's absolutely maddening and I too am exhausted from fans defending billionaires. Just stop.

matt chapman to the giants...3/54m (20m/18m/16m) with opt-outs every year.

cubs are pretty much "stuck" with morel, madrigal, and masterboney at 3rd as things stand.

wisdom is technically an option, but he's not much of a 3rd baseman.

FINWE NOLDARAN: Michael Busch has not taken any reps whatsoever at 3rd base, either on the backfields or in games. Same goes for Christopher Morel with respect to getting reps at 3rd base only (no 2B, no SS, no 1B, no OF). So at least for right now versatility is taking a back seat to having Busch (1B) and Morel (3B) concentrate 100% on mastering the position that the Cubs believe they need to play. 

Miles Mastrobuoni (3B, 2B, and SS), Nick Madrigal (3B and 2B), Matt Shaw (3B, 2B, and SS), and David Bote (3B, 2B, and SS) are the "utility" guys who have been getting reps at 3B (both in practice and in games) in addition to other infield positions.

Well, that's good.

I actually think that's a really smart move, Morel just needs to zero in on his accuracy and be less flashy, and having Bush concentrate at 1B/DH makes total sense.......on a separate note, with Shaw staying active on versatility, and given the fact that Mastrobuoni, Madrigal, and Bote seemingly have more potential to be the next Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, than starting caliber MLB players, what's the realistic possibility of Shaw making his debut this year?

imanaga gave up a couple singles and a HR to put 3 earned runs on his line, but he looked good doing it through 2.1ip and 43 pitches.

    Prior to the Cactus League game at Papago Park, three Cubs pitchers threw "live" BP on Field 1 at the Cubs Sloan Park complex, including RHRP Ethan Roberts (June 2022 TJS) and Cubs 2023 2nd round draft pick RHP Jaxon Wiggins (February 2023 TJS).  

    Wiggins last threw "live" BP three weeks ago before being shut down for a couple of weeks, and this was the first time Roberts has thrown to hitters in almost two years.

    wall stole a HR from busch...double.  nice to see him destroy a curve ball.

    upon further viewing, that might not have been a homer in too many parks...it had a lot of hang time, though.
